Scripture
A great deal of emphasis is placed upon the Bible. When asked about our creed, the Bible is referred to. Each person studies the Bible, makes use of the best advice available about it through study, both individual and corporate, preaching, and then looks to the Holy Spirit for guidance into truth. Unity through holiness is the result.
Church Membership
Salvation, being "born again", is the criterion for membership in the Church of God. When one accepts Jesus Christ as Savior, God places that person in the church. One maintains membership by staying faithful to Christ (trusting in Christ's work) and participating in the worship and fellowship opportunities offered in the local church.
Salvation
All humans have fallen short of the glory of God, are sinners, and in need of a restored relationship with God. In His grace, God sent His son, Jesus Christ, who offered Himself on the cross for the sins of the world. Those who believe on Him and receive His sacrifice are saved and have eternal life.
Baptism
Believer's baptism, by immersion, gives witness to the new relationship that one has in Christ. It also announces that one has aligned his/her self with the community of Christ, the church.
The Lord’s Supper
Usually observed 6-8 times a year, Communion is open to all who identify Christ as Lord and Savior. It is an affirmation of the oneness we share in Christ. The ordinance of Foot washing is observed on Maundy Thursday of Holy Week, reflecting Christ's call to have an attitude of servanthood.
Christ’s Return
Christ will come again, but the date and time are not known. When He returns life on this earth will end. At His coming there will be the final judgment when all will receive either eternal presence with God in a "new heaven and new earth" or eternal separation from God. Since the Kingdom of God is already a present reality, Christ's return will bring that Kingdom to its fullness and finality with a "new heaven and new earth". It is imperative that the church work and pray for Christ's coming by sharing the Gospel rather than speculating about the nature and timing of Christ's return.
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit has been provided to all believers to enable them to live holy, pure and bold lives for Christ. Evidence of the Holy Spirit's presence in the life of a believer is reflected in the bearing of the fruit of the Spirit and in servanthood both to the church and to the world.
Missions
The church has been called to take the good news of Christ to all the ends of the earth. Joining with other Church of God congregations we support colleges, seminaries, a publishing ministry, and ministries in over 80 countries, as well as local and state ministries.
Worship
Worship is done in "a fitting and orderly way". Scripture reading, singing, choir, and music combinations are part of the worship. The gospel message is a key component of the service. Typically, following the sermon, opportunity is given for individuals to respond to the Word as the Spirit directs.
Holiness
Part of the call of Christ is to live the highest kind of life, ethically, morally, and spiritually. Seeing our bodies as "temples of the Holy Spirit", calls for abstinence from specific behaviors: sexual immorality, the use of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and recreational drugs. The Spirit's gift of self-control allows restraint and moderation in all areas of life.
Unity
It is an important witness to the world when God's people, His church, live together in unity. Jesus said the world would know that He had been sent by God as God's church exhibited unity. Worshiping, fellowshipping and ministering with other believers regardless of race, gender or denomination affiliation gives evidence as to who Christ is and how through His Holy Spirit God's people can find oneness.
The Church of God Name
The name says it all! It is identification with all born-again believers. It is the term often used in the New Testament to name the early church. It is a witness to being part of the one church that Christ founded. Its use is intended to be inclusive of all those who are "in Christ"; all those who comprise God's church.
